Reviews
Amazon.co.uk Review
Family Guy shouldn't work at all. Even by the witless standards of
modern television, it is breathtakingly derivative: does an animated
series about the travails of a boorish, suburban yob with a saintly
wife, a hopeless son, a clever daughter and a baby sound familiar at
all? Even the house in Family Guy looks like it was built by the same
architects who sketched the residence of The Simpsons.

However, Family Guy does work, transcending its (occasionally
annoyingly) obvious influences with reliably crisp writing and the
glorious sight gags contained in the surreal flashbacks which
punctuate the episodes. Most importantly, the show's brilliance comes
from two absolutely superb characters: Stewie, the baby whose
extravagant dreams of tyrannising the world are perpetually thwarted
by the prosaic limitations of infanthood, and the urbane family dog
Brian--Snoopy after attendance at an obedience class run by Frank
Sinatra. Family Guy does not possess the cultural or satirical depth
of The Simpsons--very little art in any field does. But it is a
genuinely funny and clever programme. --Andrew Mueller

family guy was a show that i had watched once and wasnt mad on,in fact
it took persuading for me to take a lend of series 1 and while i wasnt
blown away,i am hungry for more as this is a funny show, never overly
hilarious though, with great wit thrown in and a sense of
freshness, although it does take a while to get off its feet.
the family guy involves the griffin family, peter is the father who is
a terrible man if the truth be told, while his heart may ultimately
belong to his family, his blindness with them at times is border line
insane, louis is a stable enough mother, proud of her family, her love
for peter who is unquestionable, she wouldnt change a thing about him
which is refreshing, chris is a typical teenager on same levels but has
the mind of a three year old, everything is amusing to him.Meg is the
16 year old daughter full of teenage anxiety whom everyone finds
unattractive and her search for acceptance rages on and finally stewie
who is after world domination and can speak and has a hatred of his
mother, along the way we meet other characters who all add up to what
is primarily a funny show,i seldom laughed the house down but i
suspect that this show will get better.

True Entertainment !, 1 Nov 2006

Mr. Laurence Williams "laurence_p_williams" (UK) - See all my reviews

I only recently came across Family Guy, but what a belated pleasant
surprise it was !

The humour is often adult in nature, but rarely rude, and this is one
of the few recent comedy shows (and that includes The Simpsons !)
which genuinely makes me laugh, as opposed to 'just' smiling or
getting the occasional chuckle.

The storylines are simple, but it is their unusual nature and the
non-conformist characters (eg a talking dog and an ultra-intelligent
baby) which make Family Guy true entertainment.

One word of advice. Search out the Region 1 DVD versions as they not
only contain Extras, such as Episode commentaries, but also show the
episodes in the correct order !

Family guy bursts on to the screen as one of the funniest cartoons of
our time. It outshines the simpsons with wittyness and a desire to
make viewers laugh. Family guy season one makes you laugh from the
first episode to the last. As were intrduced to Peter not very smart
but funny all the same. Lois an atrractive red-head who gave up her
fortune to be with peter. There children Meg-who finds trouble fitting
in to groups at school. Chris an overgrown 13 year old sweet-hearted
and wouldn't hurt a thing. Stewie one of the stars of the show who has
his heart set on destroying Lois and plans on Total World Domination
and the family dog- Brian who is really the sensible one of the family
when Brian and Stewie are in a scene it is alwasy funny as this is one
of the best double acts around. These combination of characters combine
to make a very powerful funny amination-comedy. So i ask if you hav'nt
got this what are you waiting for i mean its a reasonable price so
what are you waiting for?

Family Guy - Season One, 21 Jun 2006

The Fault - See all my reviews

Family Guy is a hilarious adult-orientated comedy. At first glance
many would think this is nothing more than another Simpsons clone but
it deserves more than that tag perceives.

The humour is aimed more towards an adult audience than the family fun
of the Simpsons and there are many laugh-out-loud moments. I
particularly like the brief flashbacks that take place in each episode
- so random but so funny. There are various sight gags that really hit
the spot and some great dialogue.

Season One comes on two DVDs featuring 14 episodes (about 4 or 5 hours
in total) but there are no extras.

Overall, Family Guy comes a close second to the Simpsons. It is better
than Futurama (very hit and miss), King of the Hill (boring - too
straight faced) and the similar American Dad (although not seen many
episodes of this). Family Guy comes highly recommended!

Almost but not quite, 8 Mar 2006

"sir_thursday" - See all my reviews

I bought this DVD after seeing a couple of episodes of Family Guy on
the TV, which I thought were hilarious. Indeed, I have reason to
believe that the later series are. However, while Series 1 is still
funny, it does not contain the quantity of laugh out loud moments that
fill the later series. Mind you, I have a feeling that if I had
watched the television shows that are satirised within I would find it
more funny.

I think what dropped it down the scale on my laugh-o-meter [patent
pending ;)] is that the creator tried to add a moral message to each
episode. Sometimes this can be useful, but it tends to dampen the
laughs a bit. If you like your comedy with a dose of ethics, you'll
love this, but in my opinion Family Guy is far more effective when you
are rolling on the floor crying with laughter.

Family Guy Season 1, 2 Mar 2006

colossi killer (england) - See all my reviews

Family Guy makes you laugh, laugh and laugh again. As I have watched
all 3 seasons up to now and waiting for a 4th i cant stop watching.
Simpsons isnt standing out as much any more just because of Family
Guy. I dont recommend it to anyone under 12 years of age to watch it
as it can contain strong language and some other things not suitable
for that age. Overall though i think buying season 1 is a great way to
start watching !!!
