FLYING DOWN TO RIO (GRANDE VALLEY, THAT IS)
-------------------------------------------

By: Brian Lusk - Manager of Customer Communication and Corporate
Editor

While “Ol’ Man Winter” has settled into much of the nation, the skies
are still balmy across South Texas. Frequent contributor, Kim Seale,
sent us these photos from his recent business trips to Corpus Christi
and Harlingen. For those of you digging your cars out of snow this
Holiday Season, we thought you might enjoy these tropical views. The
first photo is of the USS Lexington, which is now a museum in Corpus
Christi. The next shot is on the way to Harlingen, and the thin strip
of land in the distance is Padre Island. The final shot is sunset
over the Rio Grande Valley. Thanks, Kim! (click on pics to enlarge)

HOTEL STATIONERY
----------------

By: David Evans Jr. - Orlando-based Captain

I must say that I really enjoy writing. Since I spend so much time on
the road, I am constantly jotting notes to family and friends as well
as searching for unusual and interesting news and business articles to
forward to others. I agree with our wonderful SWA President, Colleen
Barrett, that I would much rather write an acquaintance than send an
e-mail. I keep a supply of personal writing paper with me, but more
times than not, I rely on the hotels that I stay in to supply my
stationery. My wonderful grandmother used to say she traveled
vicariously through me because I was constantly sending her notes
mailed in hotel envelopes and made sure she received plenty of hotel
postcards. My son’s mailman must wonder about the mailing lists he
occupies because I send him several notes each week wrapped in
envelopes found in hotel writing desks.

My own stationery consists of personalized correspondence cards and
handcrafted vellum executive size paper and envelopes. Most hotels
follow the executive or monarch size of paper and envelopes, but there
are still those out there that stick with the 8 1/2″ x 11′’ stock and
#10 envelopes. My favorite hotel writing paper is found at the Four
Seasons Resorts, a wonderful linen stock of paper and note cards with
a horizontal grooved texture. The Grand Wailea Resort on Maui also
provides guests with note cards as well as writing paper and beautiful
postcards.

So the next time you are bored in a hotel room, check out the contents
of your desk. I know you will sit there in wonder and think to
yourself, “Wow, there are people in this world that actually notice
this stuff and then take up valuable cybertime to write about it!!!”

YES VIRGINIA, SOME PEOPLE HAVE TO WORK ON CHRISTMAS DAY.
--------------------------------------------------------

By: Carole Adams - Dallas-based Flight Attendant

I am reminded of the day I had my one-on-one interview with Recruiter
Trent Ready. When I sat down I said: Â ”Trent, I’ve been thinking of
you every night after I go to bed.” Looking perkier he said, “And what
have you been thinking?” You’re going to ask “Will I work Christmas?”
I told him. He responded:  ”And your reply?” I answered: “Of course
I will work Christmas!!” Well those words have come back to haunt meÂ
22 times!

A few weeks ago, after several intense hours, I turned in my bid for
my December schedule. Every month there is usually one or two days I
need off. But DECEMBER! Referring to my Calendar I need the second off
for Ginger and Mickey’s party; the 5th is Brenda’s party; Carmen’s
luncheon is the 6th; the 9th is Christmas at my oldest son’s house;
there’s the big party on the 15th; the Christmas program on the 21st;
and a friend’s wedding on the 23rd. Ooops, I can’t forget that I
promised my youngest son I would take care of his two children onÂ
December 13, 14, and 15 in Houston while they attend a wedding in Cabo
San Lucas. These are just the things I know about as I write this on
the 8th of November. This is my first Christmas with my new honey - he
actually seems to think I will be available Christmas AND New Year’s
eve! Let’s see, how many days does that leave me to work?

I do have two things going for me. First, I have vacation December 8 -
14, and I bid to be pulled from two trips. I also have an overlap on
the first and can be pulled from a trip. That takes care of the first
of the month. The last of the month will take $$$$$. We are blessed
with the ability to put our trips into what is called “Trip Trade/Give
away”. Then if we add, from our own pockets, money - the trip just
could disappear from our schedule. So, you ask, what’s the problem?
Lost income just when taxes are due is my first thought. Then, since
Dallas is a very senior base, will I get a line that meets my
criteria? Maybe, maybe NOT! Let’s not forget, “What if My Company
needs me?” The only absolue MUST is babysitting my 6 and 8 year old
grandchildren. Home Alone was a cute movie, but…

The day after I bid, I called to get the results. Over 8,000 other
Flight Attendants did the same. So, in December I hope to see you -
but not on the 2, 5, 6, 9, 13, 14, 15, 21, 25, or 31!

WANNA GET AWAY?
---------------

By: Jill Howard-Allen - Interactive Marketing Manager of Business
Support

One of the reasons I love watching the Super Bowl is to see the
advertising. The ads are usually pretty funny and show me a little
bit about the personalities behind the companies. The “Wanna Get
Away” Southwest commercials, I think, have done a great job in
capturing the fun side of our Company. I think we can all relate to
the awkward and embarrassing moments, and these commercials have even
worked their way into everyday conversation used to describe real
life situations such as this entry in a blog by the Chicago Tribune: “His
life could become a real-life version of the Southwest Airlines ‘Want
to get away?’ ad.” I’ve also noticed quite a few “Wanna Get Away”
videos that folks have produced on various Internet video sharing
sites. Very funny and very well done!Â

In the spirit of showing off our Customers’ creativity and for all of
those “Wanna Get Away” moments that need to be told, we have a site
and contest for everyone to submit and share their own video stories.
Starting today, show us what you’ve got!  Create your own version of
our “Wanna Get Away” commercial and maybe even have your moment make
it to TV as a real Southwest commercial! Heck, even if you don’t make
it, you still might have a chance to win a vacation or airline
tickets.Â

TEAMWORK
--------

By: Guest Blogger

Jerome Schaum is a Baltimore/Washington-based First Officer

How can Southwest Airlines turn an airplane in 25 minutes? The
answer is Teamwork. Like a NASCAR pit crew, Ramp Agents, Fuelers,
Provisioning Agents, Mechanics, and service personnel swarm the
airplane as soon as it parks at the gate. In the cabin, Flight
Attendants clean each row of seats as soon as Customers vacate them.Â
In the terminal, the Gate Agents are helping more Customers checkin,
while the Operations Agents are preparing to begin the boarding
process. In the cockpit, the First Officer is busy preparing the
aircraft to fly to the next destination. Meanwhile, the Captain is
assisting in cleaning the cabin or aiding in the preboarding of
Customers with disabilities. Even the boarding Customers are helping
by lining up in the boarding groups.

Everyone is working–and–working hard–from the sweat-soaked Ramp Crew
to the Captain. This is the Southwest Airlines that we don’t
advertise: No cute commercials, and no self-deprecating wit. Just
hard work…and plenty of it. With over 3,200 daily departures, this
collective, cooperative effort unfolds daily in all four corners of
this country.

Of course, it doesn’t seem like work when you are having fun. There
is a satisfaction in knowing you are part of a Team, a combined effort
producing a greater result than any individual effort. Yet a Team is
only a group of individuals dedicated to a common goal, ably led,
competently trained, and reasonably empowered. These are the real
reasons why we can turn an airplane in 25 minutes:Â Leadership,
training, and dedication!

INTO THE CLOUDS
---------------

By: Ray Stark - Phoenix-based Captain

As I liftoff from the runway in Orlando enroute to Phoenix, I start a
turn as directed by Air Traffic Control (ATC). As the turn progresses,
I see we will pass through a few clouds lingering south of the
airport. I pause for a second and think how flying blind through cloud
layers has become so much a routine part of aviation nowadays. We do
it almost without thinking about it. Earlier this week, after flying
with my daughter who was practicing for her instrument checkride_0008.jpg,
I have had the opportunity to reflect yet again on how we today
benefit so greatly from the hard work of the trailblazers in the early
days of aviation.

In the past, clouds were to be avoided at all costs. Instruments had
not yet been developed to allow pilots to fly their aircraft with
certainty and precision with no reference to the earth’s horizon.
Without a reference to fly by, the human balance system will lull a
pilot not flying on instruments into turning upside down and losing
control. Clouds meant almost certain peril. Pioneering work by famed
aviators such as Wiley Post and Jimmy Doolittle made safe operation
inside a cloud a possibility. Because of the risks these early pilots
took to prove their ideas would work, today people who have no idea
how planes can fly in weather can still enjoy the advantages of what
has become a routine operation.

And so can my daughter. She passed her check ride this week, one of
many she will have to pass as she earns the ratings and experience
necessary to someday apply here at Southwest Airlines. Though I
received my flying training in the Air Force, the effort and energy
required along my own career path has been considerable at times.
Looking back across a quarter century of flying experience, I marvel
at the energy of youth. Her training will cover years of effort,
thousands of hours aloft, and cost her well in excess of $100,000 but
there is no doubt where she wants to be….

Inside a blue and orange jet.

Inside a cloud.

DIFFERENT, YET THE SAME…
--------------------------

By: Gordon Guillory - Dallas-based Structural Mechanic

During your Holiday Season travels you may notice something a little
different with two of our Boeing 737-700s. Southwest Airlines just
recently purchased two 737s from the Ford Motor Company, and they
spent some time in our Dallas Maintenance hangars getting retrofitted
to match the rest of our fleet. However, these two birds are from a
different flock.

The interior of both airplanes are where you will see the biggest
difference, and while they still have our cool looking leather seats,
they are just situated differently The aft galley area is noticeably
different, something I know our Flight Attendants will notice right
away.

Aircraft N270WN has been painted with the Spirit colors to match our
fleet, but N271LV won’t be painted in the Spirit scheme until 2007.
Both airplanes will be totally retrofitted during the full overhaul
that’s scheduled for 2007.

737 2.jpg 737 3.jpg

Now don’t you worry… for all that’s different with these aircraft,
there’s one thing that will remain the same, and that is our great
Customer Service.

Happy Holidays.

Paul Thompson in our Aircraft Performance Improvement group has
provided some additional interior and exterior photos of the Ford
Aircraft:

GUARDING YOUR MONEY FOR THE HOLIDAYS
------------------------------------

By: Guest Blogger

Joe McDaniel is one of Southwest’s Security SpecialistsÂ

A big part of the Holiday Season is visiting family, and travel is a
popular gift. As a member of Southwest’s Security Team for the past
seven years, I want to make sure you have all of the facts to consider
when making your buying decisions this year.

I have talked with countless Customers who chose to purchase Southwest
Airlines’ tickets (paper and electronic), southwestgiftcardsTM, and
Rapid Rewards Awards from unknown, unaffiliated third parties or from
a “friend of a friend”. Far too often, the victimized Customers are
left stranded at the airport because they chose not to deal directly
with the airline or a known travel partner. When I ask them, “Who did
you pay?” the response is usually someone other than Southwest
Airlines. Several recent cases I have investigated involved people
who wired money to unknown third parties in Indonesia and Russia. Â
When I ask why they chose to purchase the reservation or the southwestgiftcard
from an unknown third party, the usual response is, “To save some
money.” While there is nothing wrong with saving money, especially
around the Holidays, people who respond to ads like these often end up
paying for the trip twice, or jeopardizing their travel plans
altogether.Â

For those who just can’t seem to let a “too good to be true” bargain
pass by, it is important to understand the risks involved when
responding to an unknown third party that posted a random ad on the
web or in a newspaper. Below are some Southwest Airlines’ policies
and important tips that I would like you to remember when you are
shopping/surfing for discounted airline travel. These policies and
tips will help prevent your travel from being interrupted. Â Â

* Avoid purchasing reservations, southwestgiftcards, or Rapid
Rewards Awards from auction or “garage sale” websites, newspaper
classified ads, or from any “travel agent” who can not be
verified.Â

* Southwest reserves the right to cancel or refund any reservation,
southwestgiftcard, or travel voucher if it was purchased or
obtained fraudulently.

* It is against Southwest Airlines’ policy to buy or sell Rapid
Rewards Awards.Â

* To maintain the integrity of your ticketless transaction, purchase
your reservations directly from the airline or from a verifiable
travel agency.

* For southwestgiftcards, we recommend that you purchase them
directly from Southwest Airlines, or from an approved third party
vendor.

* Many Southwest Airlines tickets and southwestgiftcards are
currently being sold on web sites and in newspapers far below face
or market value. Ask yourself, “Why?”

* Avoid wiring funds to unknown third parties. This method of
payment offers no protection if you become a victim.

Should you purchase a reservation, a southwestgiftcard, a Rapid
Rewards Award, or a travel voucher from an unknown third party, we can
not guarantee the validity or security of that purchase. If you have
any concerns about a questionable advertisement or sale related to
Southwest Airlines, please contact us directly. I would like for
every current and potential Southwest Airlines’ Customer to have a
positive experience during and after their reservation purchase. Just
remember, if an advertisement from an unknown third party catches your
eye and it “looks too good to be true” then it probably is! Have a
happy, safe and prosperous Holiday Season!Â

Joe McDaniel

GOTTA LUV COLLEGE FOOTBALL!
---------------------------

By: Guest Blogger

Sally Harbeson, our Manager of Online Marketing Products, is a huge
fan of the Sooners, and she begged Jill Howard, our resident and
probably only Wisconsin alum, to put up this post about Oklahoma.Â
(Oh yeah, it contains a shameless Southwest plug too!)

I am so excited that my beloved Oklahoma Sooners have made it to the
Big XII Championship game! It’s been a long tough year. And playing
Nebraska is the icing on the cake. You see, I’m from the “Big 8″ era
back when OU/Nebraska was always the big game, and it always meant
something. So, the chance to have the game mean something this year
brings back a lot of memories.

Of course, the fact that Southwest happens to be a sponsor of the
Saturday Night College Game doesn’t hurt either. I love seeing the
southwest.com logo on the screen. And if the Big Boss didn’t have his
Holiday Party Saturday night, I might even consider hopping on one of
the nonstop flights from Dallas to Kansas City just to soak it all in!

So I will be cheering on my Sooners and hoping they make it to the
Fiesta Bowl in which case I WILL hop on a plane to see the game.Â
Hubby Bob and I have already made “reservations” at Jill’s house.Â
That is “Jill the Blogger” who loves bad jokes. Maybe I’ll bring
Elsie the Wonder Dog an OU Sweater!Â

Wishing you all many happy days of football watching and sweet Bowl
Games dancing in your heads! (Just don’t get me started on the BCS….)
