Behind-the-scenes footage of Dolmayan drum kit 07.13.06 Behind-the-scenes footage of System Of A Down drummer John Dolmayan's custom drum kit has been posted online at YouTube.com. SOAD is planning on taking a long hiatus after completing this summer's Ozzfest. The group's guitarist, Daron Malakian, is forming a new band called Scars On Broadway and plans to work on their debut album this fall. Malakian told Billboard.com that Odadjian is likely to be part of the group. Odadjian is also planning to collaborate musically with the Wu-Tang Clan. Ozzfest kicked off in Seattle on June 29 and will wrap up on August 13 in West Palm Beach, Florida. System Of A Down is co-headlining most of the trek with Disturbed, with Ozzy Osbourne topping the bill on selected dates. System Of A Down discuss upcoming projects 07.13.06 System Of A Down will be going on an indefinite hiatus following their appearance at this summer's Ozzfest. For guitarist Daron Malakian and bassist Shavo Odadjian, it's Scars On Broadway, a fresh collective that's still very much in progress but should start working on material this fall. "It's going to be another band that both me and Shavo are in, and we're going to try and go places we haven't with System," Malakian explained to mtv.com. "Each [System] bandmember has his own thing he wants to do. Shavo has films he plans on working on too. So we all have artistic itches we want to get through, and I think these are healthy ways to do it. We've been around for 12 years, so it's nice for us to break a little free and come back and hopefully appreciate [being in System] more someday. We're not putting any timelines on it. "[Scars] are going to go into a lot of different fields that System haven't gone into," he continued. "I mean, heavy metal is an influence, but it's not the focus of System Of A Down. There will be metal elements in Scars, but that's not what's going to define the music." System Of A Down malfunctioning? 07.06.06 Launch Radio Networks reports: Despite repeated assurances that their forthcoming "hiatus" is not a break-up, System Of A Down reportedly acted like a band on the brink at the opening day of this summer's Ozzfest last Thursday (June 29) in Auburn, Washington, about 30 miles from Seattle. According to mtv.com, the members of System arrived at the venue in separate tour buses. Guitarist Daron Malakian "seemed to be struggling to keep up with the rest of the band" and improvised lyrics during the first few songs of their performance. During the song "Lonely Day", while looking at vocalist Serj Tankian, Malakian crooned, "Such a lonely day, hanging out with the band/ This motherf***er, I can't stand." A source at System's record label told Launch not to read all that much into last Thursday's events, adding that the members have traveled on separate buses for a while now. Malakian himself recently said that the group's plans to take an indefinite amount of time off after Ozzfest don't spell the end for System Of A Down. "I think when a band says, 'Hey, you know, we're not gonna shoot out records consistently for a little while,'people are gonna assume that we're breaking up," he said. "But people can call it whatever they want. We know what it is, and we're comfortable with that. If we were breaking up, we wouldn't be able to get onstage together on this tour." Daron: Break is about 'being creative' 06.12.06 Launch Radio Networks reports: System Of A Down guitarist Daron Malakian says that he knows some fans aren't happy about the group taking a long hiatus after completing this summer's Ozzfest. But Malakian told Launch that taking time off from System for other projects is necessary for the group to stay fresh. "I know a lot of people get into bands and stuff, but you've gotta remember inside the bands there's artists, and there's itches and things that you wanna get done, or have some kind of freshness in your life," he said. "So it's never been about, like, 'Hey, let's consistently shoot out System records and make the biggest money in the world,' you know what I mean? For us, it's more about being creative and being able to be creative.'" System Of A Down ready for Ozzfest before break 06.09.06 Launch Radio Networks reports: System Of A Down plans a lengthy hiatus after completing its run on this summer's Ozzfest, but that doesn't mean the group isn't looking forward to co-headlining the annual heavy rock festival. Drummer John Dolmayan told Launch that he and his bandmates expect to enjoy themselves: "Well, it should be a lot of fun," he said. "They usually are. It's kind of like, we call it, like, 'rock and roll summer camp.' It's gonna be good to be out there and it'll probably be a lot of the same crew members that have been on it. So for us it's always a good time." Guitarist Daron Malakian recently told mtv.com that System would take a long break after Ozzfest and work on separate projects. He added that the group wasn't breaking up, but that "it's going to be a little while before we go out again." The guitarist is forming a new band called Scars On Boradwayand plans to work on its debut album this fall. Malakian told Billboard.com that System bassist Shavo Odadjian is likely to be part of the group. Odadjian is also planning to collaborate musically with the Wu-Tang Clan. Ozzfest kicks off in Seattle on June 29 and will wrap up on August 13 in West Palm Beach, Florida. The latest single from System Of A Down's "Hypnotize" album is "Kill Rock 'N' Roll". Daron Malakian preps new band 06.08.06 System Of A Down guitarist Daron Malakian has told Gary Graff of Billboard.com that he is in the process of forming and writing songs for Scars On Broadway, which will start operating in earnest once Ozzfest wraps in mid-August. The band is shooting to have its debut album out in the summer of 2007. "I'm still kind of getting the whole band together at this point," Malakian told Billboard.com. "After I get back home from Ozzfest that's pretty much what I'll be focusing on. "I think a System fan will be able to relate to the music, but there's a few different directions I want to take, whether it be a little bit more ethnic or sometimes electronic," he added. "There's just a few artistic directions I want to take with Scars that I haven't taken with System yet." Read more at Billboard.com. System Of A Down to go on hiatus following Ozzfest 05.03.06 System Of A Down guitarist Daron Malakian has told mtv.com that the band's headlining stint on this summer's Ozzfest will be the last time in a "a few years" that they be appearing onstage together under the System banner. "I'll always be a member of System Of A Down," he said. "That will never change. There's no rule that says you have to make records constantly, like clockwork, to continue being who you are. We want to live our lives, [because being in a band] really consumes a big part of your life, and sometimes you just want to stop and slow down. We started being just these guys in a band, and the next thing you know, everyone's asking for autographs. It plays with your head." Malakian said, after this summer's Ozzfest - which will kick off in Seattle on June 29 and wrap up August 13 in West Palm Beach, Florida - System Of A Down will go on "hiatus." "We're not breaking up," Malakian insisted. "If that was the case, we wouldn't be doing this Ozzfest, because we're a little nervous" about trying to fill Ozzy Osbourne's shoes. Ozzy will be headlining just 10 of this year's Ozzfest dates, with System topping the bill on Ozzy's off days. "We're going to take a very long break after Ozzfest and do our own things," he added. "We've done System for over 10 years, and I think it's healthy for us to get away from it for a while and come back to it later on. So, this is probably going to be ... well, it's not a farewell tour, but it's going to be a little while before we go out again." Read more at mtv.com. New book about System Of A Down published today 04.30.06 Right here in Hollywood is the name of a new book on System Of A Down. The author, Ben Myers, offers an in-depth view on the band's roots and way of becoming the well-known and appreciated band SOAD is these days. Spewed forth from the loins of mid-1990s southern California, System Of A Down have evolved from a cult band whose demo tapes swapped hands voraciously on the metal underground to one of the world’s biggest acts. Relentless early gigging spread a word-of-mouth hype around them that soon created major label interest and the gold-selling eponymous debut album. Despite their ultra-hard music and dark undertones, SOAD have always managed to break out of the underground. Show-stealing support slots with Ozzy Osbourne and Slayer propelled the band to new heights, but it was their second album, the seminal Toxicity, that turned SOAD from an underground phenomenon into a mainstream smash. After the release of their globally acclaimed hit album Mezmerize, SOAD had shifted in excess of 25 million albums. With exclusive new interviews with the band and major players involved in their story, Ben Myers’ book will be the first and the definitive account of this remarkable band. All members are Armenian-American - a first for any Western rock band. Thus the book is crammed with contextual/historical analysis, potted histories of nu-metal, politics in music, the LA music scene and its surrounding subculture. The nature of their genre-defying music - blending metal, punk, hardcore, Eastern European folk, rap, gypsy music - means this book can appeal to a wide-ranging of readership. Ben Myers interviewed System Of A Down at their first ever UK headline show in 1999 and has been a huge fan ever since. He also runs a record label, Captains Of Industry. “Myers’ work is always well-researched, passionate and grounded in reality. He builds a picture of a band with deft expertise.” Record Collector --------------------------------------------------------------------- System Of A Down - Right here in Hollywood Published by Independent Music Press (www.impbooks.com) Paperback, 208 pages incl. 8pp photos | ISBN: 0-9549704-6-2 Available at the bookshop of your choice. » news archive » A L L I N F O O N 1 2 3 4 5 1=SystemOfADown 2=Toxicity 3=StealThisAlbum 4=Mezmerize 5=Hypnotize Amazon.com: Lonely Day EP price ?
